MRV LX Series Security Application.
Introduction
This document provides a solution overview and instruction for using the
capabilities of the
LX Series sensor networking capabilities and an overview of the applications in which the
MRV LX
Series can be deployed to manage sensors and alarms in remote un-staffed
facilities and other Lights Out Management (LOM) scenarios.
LX Series Sensor Networking Solutions
The
MRV LX Series of Console Servers is designed for network administrators and
system operators who are unable to afford the economic and business consequences
of operational downtime. The LX Series is a complete console management, remote
access service solution that allows network managers to proactively respond to
all remote control, configuration, and data acquisition needs as if they were
physically on-site by extending serial/console port access and facility
alarm/remote power management capabilities over IP networks. The LX family
provides network and facility status visibility and control from virtually
anywhere.
The LX Series features a wide range of port density and power options to fit a
wide variety of applications. Console server port densities range from
1-48 ports and include power options for AC, DC and redundant power as well as
environmental and safety requirements such as the carrier class NEBS
certification.
Sensor/Alarm Management
LX Series ports can be connected directly to the relay interfaces of discrete
sensors/alarms. These connections enable network administrators to monitor and
control alarmed devices such as doors, cabinets, or other alarms utilizing dry
contacts from a central NOC. Additional sensor/alarm capabilities can be
accommodated, including gas sensors, fluids and pressure sensors by adding the
7204 Sensor Manager to the network. The 7204 is managed via any LX Series
Console Server and provides up to 128 alarm ports supporting both wet and dry
contacts. At an average cost of several hundred dollars per on-site service
visit, you can expect a rapid return on investment (ROI) with an efficient
remote access solution. The LX Series software enables each of the alarm
management ports to represent pairs of sensor/alarm input and control output
points. The alarm inputs come from input signals generated when contact closures
change state. The control output points send output signals to activate devices
such as relays, generators, lights, sirens, etc. in response to any contact
closure signal the alarm inputs receive.
LX Series Console Server ports that are configured for sensor management are
often connected to temperature and humidity sensors. These ports monitor the
temperature and humidity readings of factory environments or data centers.
Whenever a measured parameter changes beyond pre-set thresholds, an alarm signal
is transmitted.
Alarm Notification and Automated Actions
The LX Series supports an automated "intelligent self-healing" capability,
facilitates timely, intelligent and unmanned alarm and sensor device management.
Using this feature, network managers define specific alarm trigger conditions
and can then associate them with corresponding remedial actions. For
example, turning on secondary air conditioning or notifying emergency personnel.
Consequently, any defined trigger condition that occurs at an alarm point
automatically activates the corresponding self-healing action. With provisions
to define as many as 255 trigger conditions and 255 actions, the self-healing
feature enhances the reliability and availability of mission-critical networks
and ensures highly predictable fault management.

Sensor networking capabilities are triggered by a contact closure which
simulates the door of the facility opening

Once the door is opened, the LX triggers the camera to capture 5 pictures and
send them to a central management location for review

The LX also sends an alert to the operator via the network or dialing out using
the GSM/GPRS modem should the network be unavailable

Organization specific rules automatically notify different people depending on
time of day or weekend coverage.
The introduction of the model
LX-1004
GSM/GPRS, provides customers with more flexibility to address many physical
infrastructure monitoring and security applications. LX Series models are
available with either a V.90 or a GSM/GPRS internal modem. If cellular or
pager text messaging is required for a particular application and the site
doesn't have access to an analog phone line, the LX Series can dial out using
the internal GSM/GPRS cellular modem.
Using the modem, the LX can send key
personnel critical text messages, customized to a particular organization when
triggered events occur, 24 hours a day. Integrating the LX Trigger-Action and
Notification features along with the use of sensor/alarm and control points,
triggered actions will execute LX Command Line Interface (CLI) commands.
Sensor/alarm signaling can also trigger action commands to send notification
text messages using TAP (Telocator Alphanumeric Protocol) services for SMS
Messaging.
Today, inexpensive IP cameras are
readily available. These cameras can be configured to automatically
download captured video for network access. Their triggering mechanism can be the
raising and lowering of unique signal levels. Therefore, using LX Series'
ability to raise and lower signals, IP cameras can be combined with LX Series
features for a complete solution.
